🎬 SCREENING OF THE STAGE PRODUCTION “THE SEAGULL”
based on the play by Anton Chekhov
Directed by Yury Butusov
Moscow Satirikon Theatre
One of the most renowned and widely discussed contemporary interpretations of Chekhov’s The Seagull.
Yury Butusov’s production is a powerful, free and emotionally intense reflection on creativity, love as dependency, and the artist struggling to reconcile life with art.
Chekhov’s characters exist here on the edge — between hope and disappointment, creation and collapse, stage and reality. The classical text becomes an immersive theatrical experience in which birth and destruction are inseparable.
This is not a “quiet” Chekhov and not an easy evening at the theatre. The production demands attention and emotional engagement, and it is precisely this honesty, freedom and intensity that have earned it international critical acclaim.
🎭 Recorded in front of a live audience at Moscow’s Satirikon Theatre.

Yury Butusov was one of the most influential theatre directors of his generation, internationally recognised for his innovative and emotionally powerful deconstructions of classical works. His productions were presented in Paris, London, Oslo, Riga, Beijing, Seoul, Copenhagen and Vilnius.
In Russia, he served as artistic director of the Lensoviet Theatre in St. Petersburg and as chief staging director at the Vakhtangov Theatre. After leaving Russia in 2022, he continued his creative work in Europe. In The Seagull, Butusov also appears on stage, becoming part of his own production as a performer.
Following his tragic death in August 2025 as the result of an accident, this screening offers a rare opportunity to see Yury Butusov not only as a director, but also as a performer within his own production.
